How to Interpret Insights on the State Dashboard Homepage

In this article, we'll teach you how to get value out of the various components of the State Dashboard Homepage.

Insights in State Dashboard is a powerful tool designed to give regulatory agencies a comprehensive overview of their service line inventory progress, statewide. By aggregating and visualizing data in a user-friendly, map-based interface, the dashboard allows you to monitor the progress of service line inventories, view high-level visual reports, and gain a holistic understanding of service line classifications across the state.

This essential tool informs decision making processes for resource allocation, lead identification, and unknown verification efforts, ultimately aiding in forecasting future needs and managing submission periods effectively.

Important to Note

  • All of the metrics shown are for submitted data that has been accepted.  If the submissions have not yet been accepted by the state, the dashboard will not reflect the various material breakdowns.

  • The dashboard is also filtered by submission period, which can be selected in the top right corner of the dashboard.

  • In order to interpret the dashboard correctly, it's important to understand the various status types. This will allow you to see at a glance how close you are to having every single one of your utility’s inventory submitted. The different statuses are as follows:

Below, we will go over each dashboard metric card and explain how to read and interpret the data.

Submission Period Statistics

On the Submission Period Statistics card, you'll see insights into your entire state regarding submissions accepted and service line material makeup.

  • The Submission Status displays the number of submissions accepted.
  • Unknown Service Lines displays the percentage of service lines across accepted submissions that are categorized as unknown.
  • The compliance deadlines list the submission periods separated by active or inactive.

  • The Utility Material Makeup Graph can be used to view the material makeup per utility on any of the following materials:
    • Unknown

    • Lead

    • Galvanized

    • Non-Lead

This graph shows the count of how many utilities fall within each bucket of material type, along with their associated percentage.

For Example, if Utility A reports 54% of their Service Lines as Unknown and it is Accepted, they would be tallied in the 50-74% bucket for the Unknown view of this graph.

Material Breakdown

This chart provides a 30,000 ft view of the overall service line material breakdown of each submission period. You can expect the chart to change over time as verifications are completed and lead lines are replaced. Some predictions you might see in this chart:

    • A shrinking unknown bar as utilities verify their unknown lines

    • Potentially stable lead and galvanized bars in the short term as lines are replaced from these categories but also new lines are added as unknown lines are verified and potentially add to these categories

    • Strongly growing non-lead bar as utilities work to replace lead and galvanized service lines

State Overview

Maps are incredibly valuable way to display information. In our State Overview, you can filter the map in various ways and gain insights on a county level. With the map, you can:

  • Displays a county map able to be viewed through the lens of the four material types (Unknown, Lead, Non-Lead, Galvanized)

  • See a heat map of how prevalent each service line material type is by county

  • View utilities that serve each county and access their relevant information

The colors of the counties are determined by the percent makeup of the selected material type. Under the Material Type Filter, you will see a colored bar graph displaying what color is representative of what percentage.
