How do EPA classification and LCRR Tier get automatically updated in the 120Water platform?

This article explains the software logic behind the automatic EPA classification and LCRR Tier assignments in the 120Water platform.

Feature is available on Portal and PWS Pro Plans

120Water’s software is able to automatically assign the proper EPA classification and LCRR Tier for each of your service lines in the platform. You can filter your service lines by these properties to add particular lines to programs, such as LCR monitoring sampling and verification programs.

How it works:

EPA Classification

Under the revised Lead and Copper Rule (LCRR), each service line must be classified into one of the following categories:

  • Lead
  • Galvanized Requiring Replacement
  • Non-Lead
  • Lead Status Unknown

The following table is from the EPA’s Guidance for Developing and Maintaining a Service Line Inventory document. The table illustrates service line classification based on the status of the system- and customer-owned portions of the line. This is the basis on which the software automatically assigns a service line’s EPA Classification.

120Water’s software will automatically pull the material types in the system- and customer-owned fields on a service line record and whether the system-owned material was previously lead to automatically assign the proper EPA Classification based on the table above.

Each of the following fields on a service line record must be filled out in order for the EPA Classification to show up on the record automatically:

  • Public Material
  • Previously Lead
  • Private Material

You can see a service line’s EPA Classification on the record, or in the Service Line list view.

LCRR Tier

The LCRR has redefined the tiers for LCR sampling. 120Water’s software will automatically calculate the updated tier for each of your service lines as long as the location record’s “Property Classification” is identified and each of the following fields on each portion of the service line record are filled out:

  • Public Line > Material
  • Public Line > Previously Lead
  • Public Lead Solder or Lead Lined*
  • Private Line > Material
  • Private Lead Solder or Lead Lined*
  • Fittings / Gooseneck / Other > General > Lead Fittings

*The Lead Solder or Lead Lined field will only show on the service line record if the material on the public or private side is Copper or Galvanized Iron. This field is not necessary for automatic calculation.

You can see a service line’s LCRR Tier classification through the Service Line list view or on the service line record.
